Assess your infrastructure requirements
With your goals in mind, it's time to assess the current state of
your infrastructure. This assessment will tell you where you're
starting from so you can bridge the gap from where you are to
where you want to go based on your strategic goals.
Take inventory of your current IT environment including your
storage, network, operating environment and on-premise hardware.
This is a crucial step because it helps you determine the feasibility of
your cloud migration initiative by understanding the complexity of
your applications, the infrastructure that supports them and how you
can build a migration plan from there.
As you assess your applications, consider:
▪ What applications are currently being used and how?
▪ What is the purpose of these applications?
▪ What resources do the applications consume? (e.g., hardware,
storage, etc.)
▪ How easily can the applications be modified?
▪ What dependencies exist between your applications, data and
network?
Answering these questions will help you determine what applications
to migrate, which to keep on-premise, which to re-architect or re-
platform and which you can eliminate from your stack altogether.
