CHAPTER 3 Accelerating Desktop Deployments with Desktop-as-a-Service 39 These materials are © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Any dissemination, distribution, or unauthorized use is strictly prohibited. Discovering the Potential Pitfalls in DaaS DaaS is interesting, but not perfect. First, it's very new compared to other tried and true technologies, such as VDI and traditional desktops. It still likely has kinks to work out, and some of the features haven't made their way to all DaaS flavors yet. For example, Nutanix Xi Frame doesn't yet support GPU acceleration in on-premises AHV-based desktops, although the functionality is so imminent that it may be in place by the time you read this book. Still, it's an example of where DaaS is catching up in some ways to other technologies. Further, with cloud-based DaaS, you don't get as much control over the environment as you do with VDI. With VDI, you get to control everything, including storage. With DaaS, you're at the mercy of the provider. For some, this is a pitfall, but for others, it may be a benefit. For those who refuse to store confidential information in the cloud, DaaS will not be an option for now unless they choose something like a hybrid DaaS model and don't run cloud-based desktops.
